Open Day of Student Workshop 4pm onwards 11th June 2008

Student Workshop at periferry media lab- 24th May – 10th June 2008

Public space is leaving home (Vito acconci)

'Enter the public space and reclaim it instead of waiting for something to
happen.' (Andre Mesman) What happens if I place a table out there on the street? How long will it stay there? Do I have to pay a fine or not? With what kind of rules am I confronted with? It is about trying it! This is meant as an appeal just to do it, in order to experience where the borders of the public space actually are. And to learn what kind of possibilities one can get out of it.
The theoretical discourse of the public space is stuck, does not move from the spot and therefore does not lead to action. We don't believe that the public space can be saved through theoretical discussions - at least not through this alone. Of true necessity is the concrete action in the public space.
Periferry media lab is constructed on the idea of reclaiming public space. This workshop that will run for two weeks involving young artists and students from various disciplines, in the workshop students can share ideas and do a collaborative work. The workshop will focus on public space and investigating broader aspects of public art. From that starting point the participants of the workshop will interact, questioning, inspired or inventing.

As part of this workshop we invited people to brainstorm the broader aspect of public . Mrinal Gohain, Regional Manager, Action Aid gave a talk on the notion of public in the urban milieu. Nishant Sarma , Assistant Professor, IIT Guwahati, talked about notion of public transport system. Jigar took a session on Photography.
